101IECE —Orientation to Early Childhood Education
3 credits

This course is practical and realistic introduction to the early childhood profession.  this course satisfies the requirements for the Kentucky Caregiver's Certificate and satisfies a portion of the training component of the Child Development  Associate (CDA) credential.  (Twenty hours of field experiences required.)

102IECE —Foundations of Early Childhood Education
3 credits

This course builds on the student's knowledge of appropriate practices for children from birth to eight (8) years of age in multiple care settings.  Required:  20 hours of field experience.  (This requirement may be waived by faculty for students who are concurrently enrolled in 190IECE or 290IECE.) Prerequisites: Or co-requisite 101IECE or coordinator's approval.

120IECE —Health, Safety, and Nutrition
3 credits

This course develops an understanding of components and skills necessary for maintaining a healthy and safe environment for young children.  Required: 10 hours of field experience. (This requirement may be waived by faculty for students who are concurrently enrolled in 190IECE or 290IECE.)

130IECE
Early Childhood Development
3 credits

This course addresses the physical, cognitive, social, emotional and language development of children beginning with conception.  Methods of observation in early childhood settings are included and practiced during field experiences.  (This requirement may be waived by faculty for students who are concurrently enrolled in 190IECE or 290IECE.) Prerequisites:  101IECE and 102IECE, or coordinator's approval.

140IECE
Guidance of Young Children
3 credits

This course is a study appropriate methods for guiding children and promotion the development of self-discipline.  Required:10 hours of field experience. (This requirement may be waived by faculty for students who are concurrently enrolled in 190IECE or 290IECE.) Prerequisites:  101IECE or 130IECE, or coordinator's approval.

180IECE
Approaches to Early Childhood Education Curriculum
3 credits

This course introduces the student to theoretical perspectives for curriculum in early childhood programs.  It teaches the design of curriculum and examines the societal factors that impact programming for young children.  Prerequisites:  Or currently enrolled in 101IECE, 102IECE, 120IEC, 130IECE, or coordinator's approval.

190IECE
Applied Experiences in Early Childhood Education
3 credits

Students will participate in supervised teaching experiences in early childhood settings.  Skills will include observing, planning, implementing and assessing learning experi3ences based on developmentally appropriate practices.  Prerequisites/Co-requisite:  Any 100IECE level course.  Lecture: 1 hour.  Laboratory: 6 hours.

Literacy and Language
2 credits

This course will aid the teacher in bringing together language theory with classroom instruction techniques to promote language and literacy development in young children.  Required:  10 hours of field experience.  (This requirement may be waived by faculty for students who are concurrently enrolled in 190IECE or 290IECE.)  Prerequisite(s):  101IECE, 102IECE, 120IECE, 130IECE, 140IECE, 180IECE, 190IECE.

220IECE
Creative Expression
2 credits

This course addresses the role of crativity as it relates to the development of young children.  A variety of art, music, drama, and movement experiences that encourage creative expression in young children are studied.  Implementation of appropriate craetive activities in a child-centered environment is included.  Required:  10 hours of field experience.  (This requirement may be waived by faculty for students who are concurrently enrolled in 190IECE or 290IECE.)  Prerequisite(s):  101IECE, 102IECE, 120IECE, 130IECE, 140IECE, 180IECE, 190IECE.

IECE 221

IECE 230
Business Administration of ECE Programs
3 credits

Students are introduced to the many facets of establishing, operating and /or owning an early childhood program. Topics include legal forms for early childhood programs, finance, accounting, insurance, governmental regulations and assistance, economics, marketing and management principles.

235IECE
Introduction to Inclusive Education
3 credits

This course introduces and sensitizes the student to exceptionalities that occur in the development of children.  Topics include the law as related to serving children with exceptionalities and their families, various disabling conditions, the gifted, advocacy, home-based intervention, referal sources and the porcss of diagnosing, treating, and educating children with exceptionalities.  Required:  20 hours of field experience.  (This requirement may be waived by faculty for students who are concurrently enrolled in 190IECE or 290IECE.)  Prerequisite(s):  101IECE, 102IECE, 120IECE, 130IECE, 140IECE, 180IECE, or coordinator's approval.

240IECE
Administration of Early Childhood Education
3 credits

This course focuses on the administrative responsibilities of crating and implementing quality education programs for young children and their families.  This course will develop an understanding of administrative, organizational, and legal responsibilities in operating early childhood programs.  Required:  10 hours of field experience.  (This requirement may be waived by faculty for students who are concurrently enrolled in 190IECE or 290IECE.)  Prerequisite(s):  101IECE, 102IECE, 120IECE, 130IECE, 140IECE, 180IECE, 190IECE, or coordinator's approval.

245IECE
Life Sciences in Early Childhood Education
2 credits

This course provides a study of applying the concepts and principles of natural sciences, social sciences, and mathematics in learning experiences for young children.  Students will plan and prepare developmentally appropriate curriculum including activities, materials, and units.  Required:  10 hours of field experience.  (This requirement may be waived by faculty for students who are concurrently enrolled in 190IECE or 290IECE.)  Prerequisites:  101IECE, 102IECE, 120IECE, 130IECE, 140IECE, 180IECE,  and 190IECE.

IECE 250
School Age Child Care
3 credits

Provides the student with specialized knowledge, skills, and abilities for working with school age children.
(45 contact hours).

IECE 260
Infant and Toddler Education and Programming
3 credits

Examines the developmental and educational needs of children from birth to age three. Students will learn to plan, prepare, and implement the care and educational environment for children birth to age three by integrating an understanding of the physical, social, emotional, and cognitive development with developmentally appropriate practices for each stage. Required: 10 hours of field experience. (This
requirement may be waived by faculty for students who are concurrently enrolled in IECE 190 or IECE
291.) (45 contact hours).

290IECE —Practicum/Co-Op in Early Childhood Education
1-3 credits

An in-depth knowledge of a selected topic in early childhood education is the goal of this course.  The topic may be the student's choice per instructor's approval  or an issuer or topic developed by an instructor for course presentation.  Prerequisites:  101IECE, 102IECE, 120IECE, 130IECE, 140IECE, 180IECE, and 190IECE; or coordinators approval. 1-3 hours

291IECE
IECE Practicum/Cooperative Education
3 credits

Requires participation in supervised teaching experiences in early childhood settings where practical skills are applied. Skills include observing, planning, implementing and assessing learning experiences based on developmentally appropriate practices. Required: two hundred and twenty-five (225) field hours of experience. Pre-requisites: IECE 190 and [(IECE 101 and 102 and 120 and 130 and 140 and 180) or Coordinator?s Approval]. Laboratory: 3 credits (225 contact hours/ratio 75:1).


IECE 299
Special Topics in Early Childhood Education

3 credits

An in-depth knowledge of a selected topic in early childhood education is the goal of this course. The topic of study may be the student’s choice per instructor’s approval or an issue or topic developed by an instructor for course presentation. Pre-requisite: Coordinator’s Approval. Lecture: 1-3 credits (15-45 contact hours).
