Social Sciences and Public Services Division Interdisciplinary Early Childhood Education Course Descriptions 101IECE —Orientation to Early Childhood
Education This course is practical and realistic introduction to the early childhood profession. this course satisfies the requirements for the Kentucky Caregiver's Certificate and satisfies a portion of the training component of the Child Development Associate (CDA) credential. (Twenty hours of field experiences required.) 102IECE —Foundations of Early Childhood
Education This course builds on the student's knowledge of appropriate practices for children from birth to eight (8) years of age in multiple care settings. Required: 20 hours of field experience. (This requirement may be waived by faculty for students who are concurrently enrolled in 190IECE or 290IECE.) Prerequisites: Or co-requisite 101IECE or coordinator's approval. 120IECE —Health, Safety, and Nutrition This course develops an understanding of components and skills necessary for maintaining a healthy and safe environment for young children. Required: 10 hours of field experience. (This requirement may be waived by faculty for students who are concurrently enrolled in 190IECE or 290IECE.) 130IECE This course addresses the physical, cognitive, social, emotional and language development of children beginning with conception. Methods of observation in early childhood settings are included and practiced during field experiences. (This requirement may be waived by faculty for students who are concurrently enrolled in 190IECE or 290IECE.) Prerequisites: 101IECE and 102IECE, or coordinator's approval. 140IECE This course is a study appropriate methods for guiding children and promotion the development of self-discipline. Required:10 hours of field experience. (This requirement may be waived by faculty for students who are concurrently enrolled in 190IECE or 290IECE.) Prerequisites: 101IECE or 130IECE, or coordinator's approval. 180IECE This course introduces the student to theoretical perspectives for curriculum in early childhood programs. It teaches the design of curriculum and examines the societal factors that impact programming for young children. Prerequisites: Or currently enrolled in 101IECE, 102IECE, 120IEC, 130IECE, or coordinator's approval. 190IECE Students will participate in supervised teaching experiences in early childhood settings. Skills will include observing, planning, implementing and assessing learning experi3ences based on developmentally appropriate practices. Prerequisites/Co-requisite: Any 100IECE level course. Lecture: 1 hour. Laboratory: 6 hours. 215IECE This course will aid the teacher in bringing together language theory with classroom instruction techniques to promote language and literacy development in young children. Required: 10 hours of field experience. (This requirement may be waived by faculty for students who are concurrently enrolled in 190IECE or 290IECE.) Prerequisite(s): 101IECE, 102IECE, 120IECE, 130IECE, 140IECE, 180IECE, 190IECE. 220IECE This course addresses the role of crativity as it relates to the development of young children. A variety of art, music, drama, and movement experiences that encourage creative expression in young children are studied. Implementation of appropriate craetive activities in a child-centered environment is included. Required: 10 hours of field experience. 221 235IECE This course introduces and sensitizes the student to exceptionalities that occur in the development of children. Topics include the law as related to serving children with exceptionalities and their families, various disabling conditions, the gifted, advocacy, home-based intervention, referal sources and the porcss of diagnosing, treating, and educating children with exceptionalities. Required: 20 hours of field experience. (This requirement may be waived by faculty for students who are concurrently enrolled in 190IECE or 290IECE.) Prerequisite(s): 101IECE, 102IECE, 120IECE, 130IECE, 140IECE, 180IECE, or coordinator's approval. 240IECE This course focuses on the administrative responsibilities of crating and implementing quality education programs for young children and their families. This course will develop an understanding of administrative, organizational, and legal responsibilities in operating early childhood programs. Required: 10 hours of field experience. Prerequisite(s): 101IECE, 102IECE, 120IECE, 130IECE, 140IECE, 180IECE, 190IECE, or coordinator's approval. 245IECE This course provides a study of applying the concepts and principles of natural sciences, social sciences, and mathematics in learning experiences for young children. Students will plan and prepare developmentally appropriate curriculum including activities, materials, and units. Required: 10 hours of field experience. Prerequisites: 101IECE, 102IECE, 120IECE, 130IECE, 140IECE, 180IECE, and 190IECE; or coordinators approval. 1-3 hours 291IECE
