Nursing: Registered Nurse

The Owensboro Community and Technical College Nursing program prepares you to provide and manage client care. The program curriculum combines general and nursing education.  Classroom lectures are combined with the clinical learning experiences at various health agencies in the community.

The program is approved by the Kentucky Board of Nursing and the College is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. The degree of Associate in Applied Science in Nursing is awarded upon completion of the program, after which you will be eligible to take the National Licensing Examination to become a Registered Nurse.

Admission Requirements

Acceptance into the Associate Degree Nursing program is based on a selective admission process. In order to be considered for admission, you must comply with college and program admission requirements (see reverse) prior to March 1 for Fall admission, or July 1 for Spring Admission.  Documentation of active status on the Medicaid Nurse Aide Registry or successful completion of an equivalent nursing course is required prior to enrolling in the first nursing course.

  • Attendance at one Pre-Admission Nursing Conference prior to the March 1 application deadline for fall, July 1 for spring admission.
  • Completion of the Personal Data Form, to be obtained at the pre-admission conference.
  • Apply to Owensboro Community and Technical College with the declared major of “Pending Nursing”.
  • Submit secondary school transcript or high school equivalency credentials (GED scores and the official certificate).
  • Submit transcripts of any college or practical nursing education.
  • Submit Scores from the ACT or equivalent examination. Minimum acceptable score is a composite score of 17.
  • Take the Computerized Nurse Entrance Test (CNET). Minimum acceptable score is 50th percentile.

The following must be completed prior to entering the first nursing course:

  • Admission to the program
  • CIS 100
  • BSL 110 Human A & P with a “C” or better
  • MT 110 or MT 150 with a “C” or better
  • PY 110 Gen. Psych. or PSY 100 Intro. to Psych.
  • Successful completion of MNA or NAA 100 course
  • Specific laboratory tests, current immunizations, current TB skin test and the Hepatitis B vaccine series
  • CPR-Health care provider course (must be kept current throughout the program)

The Kentucky Board of Nursing may deny admission to the NCLEX-RN exam to a nursing graduate who has been convicted of a misdemeanor or felony that involves acts that bear directly on the qualifications of the graduate to practice.

Length of Program

You can earn an associate of applied science degree in two years if you maintain full-time status.
