Welcome to the Co-op Experience!

What Is Cooperative Education?
Cooperative education refers to a course offering in the Owensboro Community and Technical College curriculum consisting of on-the-job work experience in a business or industrial establishment.  These experiences must be planned and supervised by the school and the employer to ensure that the work experience contributes to the student’s education and career objective.  The purpose of cooperative education is the development of occupational competence.  The student receives both academic credit for the work and a paycheck.

Who is eligible for Co-op?
Anyone who is enrolled in a technical program that offers co-op may be eligible.

To enroll in co-op, the student must:

  1. Have been enrolled in a program long enough to gain occupational competence for entry-level employment (minimum of 12 academic hours).
  2. Be making satisfactory progress (GPA of 2.2 or better).
  3. Be recommended by the instructor as ready to begin work in an on-the-job training program.
  4. Be approved by the Co-op Coordinator.

Co-op must be applied for prior to the upcoming semester in which the student wishes to co-op.  Students who wish to apply should contact their instructor, faculty advisor and the co-op coordinator.

What is the cost for the Co-op Experience?
Since cooperative education is an academic course, it will cost the same per semester hour as any other class and could range from one credit hour to four credit hours per semester.

PRACTICUM
Practicum, an unpaid alternative to Cooperative Education, is an integral element of a student’s learning experience.  This course allows the student to integrate formal classroom learning experiences with supervised work experience.  The work experience site, sometimes on-campus, is chosen for its relevance to the student’s major occupational area of study.  In addition to students’ duties in Practicum, one hour per week must be scheduled between instructor and student for classroom instruction.  Students who wish to apply should contact their instructor and the Co-op Coordinator.

The grading system for Cooperative Education and Practicum is identical to that for other courses at the Owensboro Community and Technical College.
